Firefighters continued critical prep work today across both the Sand Lake and Twelvemile Lake fire areas to ensure readiness ahead of warmer, drier weather.

Crews focused on structure protection near Healy Lake, where the Division Group Supervisor and DNR personnel inspected and tested pumps, and continued assessments of structures and Native allotments. Preparations and personnel are moving into place to be ready to respond if conditions shift.

At Lake George, Division leadership finalized operational plans, while all pumps and hose lay systems were confirmed in working order. Resources are staged and ready for implementation.

A new boat operator completed a familiarization trip to safely access remote locations. The fire team also welcomed the Tanana Chiefs 2IA hand crew – who’s ability to break into smaller squads for better coverage across the complex terrain of the multiple lakes with limited access, will be a great asset.

Efforts are now focused on establishing remote spike camps at various lake locations. These camps will allow for quicker responses to any increased fire activity expected with rising temperatures later this week.

Acreage remains unchanged, with Sand Lake at 4,893 acres and Twelvemile Lake at 18,744 acres. Weather conditions remain variable with localized thunderstorms, but overall fire behavior continues to be minimal. A total of 56 personnel are currently assigned to the incident.
